We strive to collect as little data as possible and to be very straight-forward about the data we do collect and how we use it.
In order to increase our search engine optimization, we work with Google. Google collects the same type of information Google always collects, and a small amount of that data is shared with us in order to make the website more efficient and improve performance. To our knowledge, data is not collected by Google when you opt out via the provided popup form.
WordPress also collects limited information, as do Jetpack and WooCommerce. Some of this data is also shared with us to improve on our site’s interaction with the people who visit it.
When visitors leave comments on the site or submit requests for contact, we collect the data shown in the comments form. We also collect the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help detect spam. An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. If you post a comment, your profile picture (if you choose to provide it) is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
We intend to keep details such as company names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and information related to what you purchased for as long as there is a chance to work with you. We may use that information from time to time to contact you directly. We do not use 3rd party systems to market to our clients. Other than to secure our data in cloud storage, we never place your information in the possession of another entity for any reason. We would have to do this if we were legally required but that has never happened and we don’t expect it to. Even when saving your data online, it is encrypted and meant only for our direct contact with you.
If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.
More importantly, if you are able to upload to the website, please let us know. It is not our intention to allow uploads to the website for security reasons. If you are able to upload to the site, it’s probably going to be a long day for someone.
Cookies: I am sure they are used by the companies aforementioned, and I know the site can use cookies to help you navigate, but we do not use these or keep them (or even know how to use them or keep them). As far as I know, you have full control over cookies in the browser you use. I sure hope that is true. Maybe Google wants to chime in on that one.
If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed. I also hope that is true.
If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day. Really just buy something. No need to post. If you buy something, we KNOW how the data will be used and have been clear about that.
Embedded content from other websites
Assets on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website. We do not know of anything currently on the site that would do this, but I will hopefully remember to edit this page if that ever changes. We do partner with some of the largest manufacturers in the world and data is a huge side-hustle for large corporations.
They may collect data about you when you visit our site even though we don’t use that same data (or care to know how to) when you visit theirs. They may use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website. They may even pay your nosy neighbor to keep an eye on you. It’s sleazy. I hate it.
Who we share your data with
NOBODY! Our relationship with you is the most important thing to us. Not only do we not want to make you feel dirty and used by sharing your information, we value your privacy and respect you and love you and really want you all to ourselves.
How long we retain your data
As mentioned, the intent is to keep pertienent business data as long as possible. Any data used by the big guys will be kept for as short of a time as possible.
For users that register on our website, we also store the personal information you provide in your user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time.. Website administrators (I’m guessing that’s gonna be me for now) can also see and edit that information. You are alway in control of it, though.
What rights you have over your data
If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes. For instance – if you place an order, we need to keep that data for business reasons. That includes your name, company name, billing/shipping addresses, phone number and the equipment you purchased. We cannot dump that data, but we will respect your right to break up with us, and won’t get all stalker on you. We love you enough to hope your happy even if that means it is not with us.
Where your data is sent
Again, we don’t WANT to send it to ANYONE! Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. We currently use Askimet. The other companies I mentioned also have the data they keep. I will post their privacy policies shortly. If we engage others that intend to collect data about you, I’ll try to remember to post that, as well. Some of the cookies placed in your browser have nothing to do with us. These data-hungry bottom-feeders track us all around the internet no matter what we do to stop them. I’m probably more interested than you are about who is placing cookies in your browser from this website. Any information you can share with me that I haven’t shared with you will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you for considering BackUp BarCode Systems!
God bless you and yours!
